Anik A1

In 1972, Telesat Canada launched the communications satellite Anik A1. Anik A1 made Canada the first country in the world to have a satellite in geostationary orbit for domestic (that is, non-military) purposes. Anik A1 improved telephone and television communications, bringing Canadians closer together.
